    El Rancho Vegas

    El Rancho was the first casino resort to open on the Las Vegas Strip. It was built by Thomas Hull, owner of the El Rancho motor inn chain.

    The hotel opened on April 3, 1941. The complex included a casino, a showroom, restaurants, and recreation facilities. A large number of bungalow-style rooms were available. In addition, vacation cottages were offered with kitchens and private lawns.

    The casino featured a gambling floor with slot machines, blackjack, and craps. Guests could also go horseback riding or enjoy a cruise on Lake Mead.

    A landmark neon-lit windmill stood tall over the casino. However, the main building was not saved. The fire was so devastating that eyewitnesses cried.

    The casino had been expanded to include a 52-lane bowling alley. It also offered an indoor comedy club, Rodney’s Place.

    Resorts International

    Resorts International was an iconic casino chain. The company opened its first casino in Atlantic City in 1978. This was the first time that a casino was permitted to be built outside of Nevada. It opened with great fanfare.
